John is an internationally renowned climber, who has established many world-class new routes over the last 30 years. He was instrumental in bringing competition climbing to the UK in the late 1980’s and has continued to develop the sport through to the present day.
During his long career, John has worked with companies as diverse as Adidas, Benetton, Film Nova, Sport England and a host of key outdoor brands in roles ranging from product design, training, procurement, business development and strategic brand marketing.
In 2005 John set up the Manchester Climbing Centre, situated in a Grade 2 listed redundant church, and in 2010 led the expansion of the company with the opening of major climbing centres in Harrogate and Reading. More recently, John worked in partnership with Kirklees Active Leisure to open the Huddersfield Climbing Centre in 2015.
John has worked with Sport England in an advisory role and as a consultant to the British Mountaineering Council and currently sits as a Trustee of both the Association of British Climbing Walls and the National indoor Climbing Award Schemes (NICAS). He made a major contribution to the development of NICAS, which are now recognised as the only national award schemes for young people and offered in all climbing centres.
John is passionate about developing the Climbing Centre Group and developing the future of indoor climbing and adventure centres.
A lover of all aspects of the outdoors, John is a keen skier and mountain biker, as well as an active climber.

Andrew has been working in the outdoors since 1984, starting his career in outdoor education and then moving on to a series of senior management & ownership roles in businesses such as Rohan, Mountain Equipment, Sprayway, the Outdoor Sports Company and now climbing walls.
He is best known as the modern founder and co-owner of the international technical brand Mountain Equipment where he worked for 17 years and then sold in 2003.
Today he is the CEO of the Outdoor Industries Association, the body that represents the UK Outdoor Recreation Industries to government and across the world. He also works as an independent consultant in Outdoor Recreation as well as owning several companies in the Outdoor sector.
Andrew sits on many outdoor recreation committees, both government and NGO, working with DCMS, PHE, Sport England, National Trust, SRA, UK Active and many others.
In 2015 he was asked by Helen Grant MP the Minster for Sport to chair a group working on a National Strategy for Outdoor Recreation.
At the end of 2015 the new Sport Strategy paper was released with substantial sections on Outdoor Recreation – referencing the work Andrew and the OIA had done.
Andrew is an accomplished mountaineer, mountain biker, ski mountaineer and GB Ironman triathlete with first ascents in Patagonia & Antarctica and a broad background of outdoor adventures across the world.
