John Dunne

John is an internationally renowned climber, who has established many world-class new routes over the last 30 years. He was instrumental in bringing competition climbing to the UK in the late 1980’s and has continued to develop the sport through to the present day.

During his long career, John has worked with companies as diverse as Adidas, Benetton, Film Nova, Sport England and a host of key outdoor brands in roles ranging from product design, training, procurement, business development and strategic brand marketing.

In 2005 John set up the Manchester Climbing Centre, situated in a Grade 2 listed redundant church, and in 2010 led the expansion of the company with the opening of major climbing centres in Harrogate and Reading. More recently, John worked in partnership with Kirklees Active Leisure to open the Huddersfield Climbing Centre in 2015.

John has worked with Sport England in an advisory role and as a consultant to the British Mountaineering Council and currently sits as a Trustee of both the Association of British Climbing Walls and the National indoor Climbing Award Schemes (NICAS). He made a major contribution to the development of NICAS, which are now recognised as the only national award schemes for young people and offered in all climbing centres.

John is passionate about developing the Climbing Centre Group and developing the future of indoor climbing and adventure centres.

A lover of all aspects of the outdoors, John is a keen skier and mountain biker, as well as an active climber.
